Wow! The 2010 Judo World Championships are finished and they were amazing.
If you weren’t able to watch some of the matches on the International Judo Federation’s website (http://www.ijf.org), I certainly hope you were able to follow at http://www.Ippon.org
Even though I’m not a huge fan of the new rule changes in Judo, I still love the sport. Its intense, its exciting and it’s controversial. It has all the qualities of a soap opera
It makes you wanna keep coming back to see more and more.
Even though the new rule changes occurred, I think many people wanted to see if the people who won before could have won under the new rule changes. And it really seems like those that dominated before, are still dominating and also that Japan is having a tough time dominating the sport as they used to and that’s a good thing.
As the sport develops, Japan can’t possibly continue to dominate everything, all the time. If this occurs, that means that there hasn’t been any development or growth. Japan, as the originator of the sport, should actually be excited and happy when other countries have grown and improved to the point where they can actually challenge and beat the country where the sport was founded.
I remember when non-Brazilians started doing well in Brazilian Jiujitsu. Practitioners of the sport of BJJ were excited. I remember when Royce Gracie lost in Mixed Martial Arts, he said that he can’t lose because no matter if he wins or loses, Gracie Jiujitsu still won the day.
I think with the rule changes, Japan should be happy that Judo still won the day. Or Judo as they would like to see it and practice it.

Grip Fighting Is Still
The Most Important
Skill For The Judoka
=================
Like it, love it or hate it.
The bottom line is this…..
IF YOU CAN’T GRIP…. YOU WON’T WIN.
And if you don’t have the strength, power and upper body endurance to grip. You will not make it in this game.
I’m a big believer in the grip fighting game and teaching grips.
I have since retired, but when I was the Head Coach of the Bahamas I tried to drill this point home to the practitioners there. And after getting deep into the game you have to go over many aspects of the game such as:
- High Righty
- Hight Lefty
- Double Lapel
- Double Sleeves
- Standard Orthodox Grip
- Cross Gripping and going over the back (both sides also referred to as climbing)
- Double Armpit
- 1Handed Judo
and many other gripping situations.
After learning how to grip at the basic level, you have to learn the various and different styles available so that you can:
(1) Understand which one works best for you
(2) Understand the strength and weaknesses of the various styles
Now what’s so funny is this… The basic rules of gripping apply in every situation, BUT knowing what to do during the grip fight is something that is instictive, as Jimmy Pedro puts it, that can only occur once you see and experience various styles of gripping.
If you can travel and get the experience, GREAT.
If you cannot, please allow Jimmy Pedro and Rhadi Ferguson to come into your home and/or dojo and provide you with the grip fighting knowledge that you so greatly need in order to improve.
I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to go to some judo clubs and watch them practice. They have no clue what they are doing or how to implement their throws. They are switching sides in their gripping, putting their hands in the wrong place and trying to “look” for openings instead of using the gripfighting to “create” the openings.
What’s worse is the folks who believe “they’ve got it.” That they know it, already. Heck, I’m still learning about gripping, so there’s no way that somebody “has it already.”
If you think you know it already and you don’t need any help, great. Jimmy and I wish you the best in your on the mat pursuits.
If you KNOW that you need some help and would like to take your judo to the next level, we’ll be glad to help you.

I just wanted to give a HUGE congratulations to Kayla Harrison who won (and earned) a Gold Medal at the 2010 Judo World Championships.
I’ve known Kayla from some time and knew her at a time when she didn’t know much and have seen her grow and develop into a grip fighting and matwork machine! I’m really proud of her and what she has accomplished in her life. She has truly jumped and leaped over many hurdles in life to achieve one of her dreams.
Congratulations Kayla, I and the rest of the Judo World are in awe of your achievement!
