Rhadi Ferguson has something to tell you

Auto Date Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Wait a minute……

Before you go to another practice

Before you lift another weight

Before you do another uchikomi

Before you run another lap

Before you climb another rope

Before you practice another grip sequence or watch another DVD or video, make sure you READ THESE TESTIMONIALS ABOUT THE DVD “BEYOND THE RINGS BELOW”

=======================
Here’s what others have had
to say about Beyond The Rings
=======================

“Beyond the Rings DVD was excellent…”

I thought this DVD was excellent. I have watched many Judo video’s explaining techniques and sequences that are supposed to make you a great athlete. ‘Beyond The Rings’ goes into the depth of what it takes to win. It offers the story of two great athletes explaining commitment, passion and sacrifice; something that is not spoken of in any of the technical videos that I have seen.

This DVD shows that there is more in the world of an athlete then just mastering a grip sequence or practicing an arm-bar. I recommend this DVD for not just every judo player but every athlete that has a passion for sport.

Alex Cress- New York Athletic Club

“I enjoyed Beyond The Rings very much…”

Both Rhadi and Taraje look very experienced and to share those hardships is really insightful for an aspiring judoka. Although I liked the info on specific training regimes on strength, conditioning and technique, this is also a very important aspect of judo, to know how athletes feel, the hardships of training, the financial difficulties, how determination can burn all obstacles. I totally recommend it especially if you want to boost up your motivation and will.

John Choudalakis

“The Beyond the Rings DVD was excellent…”

The Beyond the Rings DVD was excellent on the part of preparing your mind and the level of commitment one has to put into Judo.

Jeff ‘Ice Blue’

“Beyond the rings articulates these ins and outs of how an ahtletes life can be affected by “the Rings”…”

Beyond the Rings was an excellent DVD. As A former Olympic Training Center Resident Athlete and 2001 US. National And World Championship Taekwondo Team Member, I was at the top of my game I was prepared for the physical, mental and emotional ride of world class competition. At the Height of my success I laid out a plan with all those who were around me.( Parents, Friends, Coaches, and the Community). This was with the advice of friend and fellow athlete Rhadi.”Plan your work and work your plan” something he would always say. Beyond the rings articulates these ins and outs of how an ahtletes life can be affected by “the Rings” or any major competitive arena. Beyond the rings is a must for those who have thier eyes on set on pursuing,or supporting someone who has his or her sites on being succesful in world class competition. “It’s all about being prepared.”

Sean A. Knox
5th Degree Black Belt Taekwondo
2001 U.S. National Taekwondo Team
U.S. Olympic Training Center Resident Athlete

“The Beyond the Rings DVD was very inspirational…”

This was a very inspirational and entertaining look at Taraje’s life and training. I will cheer for all of our United States Olympians in Beijing, but knowing what Taraje has had to go through makes me want to pull for him extra hard. Rhadi’s section of the DVD was more intellectual, and not as touching. But there is much in his words to ponder over, for those looking to compete at the highest levels of sport.

Amado Fernandez

“I loved “Beyond the Rings” dvd…”

I loved “Beyond the Rings” dvd for its realism about the lives of Olympians. These hard working Americans pay the ultimate price for success. It’s not about a bunch of techniques, it’s about finding who you are as a person and mentally immersing yourself in your craft. “Beyond the Rings” dvd is for anyone that is willing to do yeoman-like work. Keep up the great work and GO TARAJE ’08!

An “Inside” Look At Olympic Level Judo Preparation (part 5)

Auto Date Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Greetings.

I was just training with Taraje and I wanted to let you in on what we were doing.

In the 60kg weight class a throw called “Sumi Gaeshi” is the new Drop Seoinage.

About 5 to 10 years ago, everybody in the 60kg weight class was doing drop seoinage.  Now,
everybody is doing Sumi Gaeshi.

It is a HARD throw to stop and a very safe attack to perform. Because so many people in the
weight division use it, Taraje and I had to really prepare to stop it and of course, we start from
the ground up.

Here’s part five of Taraje’s training

Six Pack or Kangaroo Pouch?

===========
Introduction
===========

Look, I’ve done it all.

I’ve walked up to women and asked, “So when are you due?” thinking that they were pregnant and damn near got beat to death.

The crazy think is that I was trying to be nice.

Who knew that they were carrying so much ‘extra’ that they looked like they were pregnant.

I’ve also been on the cell phone in the airport talking and said, “You know, I just believe that being over-weight is a sin.” This statement didn’t sit well with the people listening in to my conversation.

I’ve also been on several airplane flights where the person next to me had their whole body ‘overflowing’ into my seat and they were sweating profusely to the point where I was getting their ‘juices’ on me. NOT COOL!.

Now, I must admit. I’ve made some mistakes and been in some situations where my I couldv’e certainly been “smoother around the edges”. I’m not saying that I don’t make errors.

I certainly have.

I certainly do.

And I will probably again.

But I can tell you this.

What I KNOW THAT I HAVE IS PASSION!!

Many of you know of health concerns that the individuals in my extended and immediate family have suffered from and many of you are aware that their problems have been doggone near eliminated through the elimination of fat!

My father went from 265 pounds to a right and tight 224 pounds and he’s planning on finishing doing his 3rd half marathon this year.

My mother completed her 1st half marathon too (I’d like to tell you how much she lost but good ole mom won’t tell me how much she weighs) :-)

Last year at this same time I weighed 241 pounds and now I’m chilling at a right and tight 220 pounds. (And I’m working at getting to 212. (when I get down there, I’ll be sure to send pictures).

What I’m saying is this……

==============
Do Yourself A Favor
==============

Many people are dying unnecessarily because they refuse to impose healthy eating habits.

We are ALL going to die. That part we can’t control, but we can control how we live.

Let’s not live life huffing and puffing to walk up a flight of stairs or live life breathing heavy before after and during sex and worse yet, not being able to perform with your mate at all.

Let’s not live life loathing the times when we have to bend over to tie our shoes.

Let’s not live life where we have to eat so much that its necessary for us to unbutton our pants so that we can BREATHE!

Let’s get it together good people.

Let’s stop walking around with these “kangaroo pouches” and start walking around with our six packs. we’ve got ‘em. All we have to do is show ‘em.

So whaddya say?

===============
But, Rhadi, it’s so
hard
===============

Yeah, I know its hard, but its harder making your loved ones watch you suffer from diabetes, heart disease, and ailments that are directly and indirectly related to your weight gain or lack of weight loss, healthy eating and exercise.

So PLEASE help me help you. I want you to get the help that you need. If you need someone to talk to, please give me a call or send me an email and set up a phone consultation.

=============
Introduction
==============

This past weekend I spent MY ENTIRE weekend at the United States Junior International Invitation Judo tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

It was very well run tournament and I had a great time there.

I had the opportunity to coach Aaron Kunihiro, who is a training partner of my client Taraje Williams-Murray and a student of 4-Time Olympian and creator of Grip Like A World Champion, Jimmy Pedro.

It was a pleasure coaching “Kuni”, he’s one great competitor and he listens very well. I was really impressed with his conditioning and his ability to implement sound strategy and he has some great foot movement.

I also noticed that every time “Kuni” came off the mat and I explained some things to him in terms of strategy implementation that there were 20-30 people looking at what I was saying.  It felt a little bit uncomfortable, but I understood that the people there were trying to soak up the knowledge as I do when Eddie Liddie is around.

I had 4 or 5 people standing by me while I was coaching in the coaches chair and when I stood up, I noticed on guy around me who I saw ALL DAY. :-) He said, “I just wanted to see and hear your coaching style for myself.”  I laughed and said, “Bro., you’re doing the right thing, it is EXACTLY what I did and what I still do.”

=============
On another note
=============

I really have to thank God for being super fortunate to have trained some of the athletes that I have in my career as a coach. I mean, I’ve trained UFC fighters, World Champions, Olympians, and All Americans and it has been a blessing.

It has also been a curse.

Why?

Well, I’ve come to expect a certain mindset from elite level athletes and I have to remind myself that a ranking on a roster doesn’t make you an elite level athlete – your mentality does.

This past weekend I was talking with Taraje’s main coach Arkadiy Aranov, and Arkadiy pulled some money out of his pocket and I joked with him and said, “Where did you get all of this money and how can I get some too. If I had your money, I’d burn mine.”  He said in his hard European voice, “Ruskie (my Russian nickname), money not come from here, money come from here.”  And when he said, “Money not come from here”, he pointed to his pocket. And when he said “Money come from here” he pointed to his head.

And you know what – HE WAS EXACTLY RIGHT!!

And the same thing occurs in judo.  Your ability to win doesn’t come from your techniques; it comes from your head.

===============
Now Some of You
Are Not Going To
Like This Part, but…..
If you read it and don’t
jump to conclusions
you’ll be okay
===============

Look, I’m a black belt in Brazilian Jiujitsu and I rolled with some of the best male and female jiujitsu athletes and judo athletes in the WORLD!!

And I’ve rolled with Ronda Rousey.

Someone asked me how is her mat work. And I told them very honestly, “She’s about the level of a good brazilian jiujitsu blue belt.”

They were shocked.  And I told them, “Wait a minute! These are two different sports. Don’t get upset. She’s good, but her ability to arm bar everyone is not because her arm bar technique is sound because it is fundamentally flawed in many areas, but she TRULY believes that she is SUPPOSED to get the arm and finish. And remember, NO ONE THAT SHE’S FIGHTING knows anything about defending the arm bar which is a 12 week lesson plan inside of a curriculum in and of itself.”

Ronda Rousey’s best asset, other than her good looks and charming smile  :-)   is that she HAS GOT TO BE THE MOST mentally tough person on the judo squad.

PERIOD.

And that’s not to short change anyone else.  Nor is it to say that she doesn’t have good technique, because she does. But what I’m telling you is that she is mentally tough beyond what you have seen in other athletes.  It’s really ridiculous and awe-inspiring.

Ronda Rousey will pour a box of nails in a bowl and put some milk over it and eat that s–t like its a bowl of cereal and then wash it down with a glass of Pine-sol and belch and go to practice with the worst stomach ache ever and whip every person’s @$$ on the tatami. She is THAT TOUGH.

Now….  Let’s get into the meat of the discussion

This weekend one student asked me about a gripping strategy and attack strategy that she could employ to win a match. I thought about it. Listen to what she said. Asked some more questions and then provided her with a great answer.  She asked me to warm up with her. And I did. And about 3 minutes before we were done with the warm-up, she asked me, “So what should I do if this doesn’t work?”

I said, “Huh?”

I’ve never heard that before.  Never.   I’ve heard, “Do we have a plan B?”

I’ve heard, “I don’t feel real comfortable with this, am I missing something?”

I’ve heard, “What else can I put with this to make it more effective?”

But I’ve NEVER HEARD, “So what should I do if this doesn’t work?”

================
I was SHOCKED!!
================

I was stumped for a second because I’ve never heard such talk.

That’s like being in football practice and the coach send in a play and you say, “But what if this doesn’t work.”

Well, with that mindset, the coach already knows that you DON’T BELIEVE in the play and if you don’t BELIEVE in the play, you won’t be able to run the play FULL SPEED!!

So when that question arose I said to myself, “Ahhhhhhhhhhhh s–t!!!!”  (of course I said this in my mind. I was very aware where I was and was not dropping curse worse like some other adults that I noticed at the tournament. And I was VERY PISSED about that and will speak to the tournament organizer at the next tournament to let them know that the adults need to be very cognizant of where they are and who is around. THIS IS A JUNIOR JUDO TOURNAMENT not a college game day tailgating party!  There was some dude who was dropping “F” bombs in front of my son and I could have knocked his two front teeth out. And not only was my son there but many instructors and young children. I really didn’t want to say anything to him because -if he would have said something that I would have perceived as being disrespectful, things could have gotten ugly. Hey, we all make mistakes, but we need to be responsible around the young folks. Amen?)

I digress………..

So after I said that in my mind I replied, “Don’t worry, it will work.” And then I said, “You’re warmed up now, you’re fine” and I took of my judo gi top.”

Why?

Well, because, I saw THE LOOK.

THE LOOK that we’ve all had and THE LOOK that the lion sees when he spots the gazelle in the Serengeti.

It’s the look of fear, the look of a lack of confidence. The look of being unsure.

There’s no game plan that can erase that look and I made A HUGE MISTAKE.

====================
What Was The Mistake
That I Made
====================

The mistake was. I proceeded to help this athlete because someone who I know who has THE LOOK asked me. And I just assumed the person that they brought to me had THE LOOK too. So I didn’t stop and look into that person’s eyes before I spoke, as I usually do, I just began providing some help. But it wasn’t until we were alone practicing on the tatami, that I saw that this athlete didn’t have the look.

They were the GAZELLE and not the LION.  They were afraid.  Afraid of the 5 minute fight, the battle, the war which was about to occur. They were afraid of implementing a strategy that albeit new, was what they needed to win.  “Kuni” didn’t have this problem. He had the look, but I’ve seen times when he didn’t have THE LOOK too.  It happens to us all – but IT DOESN’T HAPPEN TO RONDA ROUSEY!!

==============
Closing
==============

The motto of the United Negro College Fund is, “A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Waste”.

Nothing could be more true.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

To be completely honest with you. Many of today’s athletes really need a good dose of “CHUMP REPELLENT”!!!!  You NEED to understand what things that you must do in order to reduce the moments when you are the GAZELLE so that you can increase the moments of you being the LION.

Take care and have a great day.

Sincerely and with the utmost respect,

P.S. I just want to let you know that in August I will have a brand new product coming out. It is an audio CD that I’ve been working on for the past 3 months. There are some things that have really become super clear and super evident to me as a coach and a former player and one who has sat in the coaches chair and has had the opportunity to look at the judo game internally, circumspectly and retrospectively.  I can’t wait to share this newfound knowledge with you.

P.P.S.  You are absolutely going to love this new set of knowledge and I WILL make it such that you can get your hands on it. But it won’t BE CHEAP because I if there’s on thing I know you don’t like it’s a cheap cup of coffee, a cheap man or woman, cheap beer and low quality information (which is cheap). I’ve going to do what I always do….undercharge and over deliver. So be on the lookout in August. More to come!

We’ve gotta do better. C’mon now :-(

Auto Date Friday, July 18th, 2008

Earlier today I provided you with some solutions to REALLY improve your judo career and what did you do?

You looked at them and then you just went on with your day.

I’m trying to help you.

As the line went in Jerry McGuire, “Help Me, Help You.”

Now right now I’m offering you some of the same exact advice, direction and tutelage that I provide and provided to Taraje Williams-Murray in order to get him on the 2008 Olympic Team and it’s the same advice that allowed me to take a man, who NEVER even won a National Championship all the way to the level of Olympic Alternate.

Look, I’m trying to help you.

But if you don’t believe me. Read what 2-Time Olympian and 4-Time National Champion Taraje Williams-Murray has to say,
======================
A Word From 2008 Olympian
Taraje Williams-Murray
======================

I’ve had the opportunity to know Rhadi Ferguson for some time now. As a matter of fact the first time that I saw him was when I was still a young kid and he came up to New York to fight in the New York Judo Open and I saw him absolutely destroy and annihilate the competition.

Rhadi’s knowledge about Mixed Martial Arts, Judo, Brazilian Jiujitsu and the fighting game is remarkable. He’s probably the most intelligent coach that I’ve seen when it comes to total and complete preparation.

When I was looking for a coach, I was looking for a ‘real’ coach. Not someone who could write some numbers down on a piece of paper, but someone who could understand me and would take the time to know ‘me’ not just my style or my game, but me. I wanted someone who could take not just my game but “Taraje” the person, to a whole new level.

I wish I could go into depth about some of the things that Rhadi has done in my life. He has really helped me a great deal. Rhadi single handedly constructed a diet and weight loss plan that I follow which allows me to lose 15 pounds in 14 days without missing one meal. Rhadi has also taught me Brazilian Jiujitsu and showed me how to put it into my Judo game which has literally saved me on more than one occasion. And most importantly he listens.

Rhadi is certainly one of the main reasons why I’m one of the top 10 Judo Players in the World and why I’m still in the ‘game’ when I was thinking about getting out. The most pivotal point of the coach/athlete relationship, and when I knew I had the right person in my corner is when Rhadi told me last year, “Taraje, this Judo stuff is great, you’re already an Olympian, but you are not yet a Graduate. Finish school! That is the number one priority right now.”

Only someone who cares about you will provide you with information like that. I’m proud to say that I’ve since finished my degree in Computer Science, my weight is down, I’m stronger than ever and I’m more prepared than I’ve ever been physically and mentally thanks to Rhadi.

Rhadi never says that he “produced” anybody. He always tells me, “Taraje, you were a winner before I met you. It’s just my job to pull the ‘winner’ out!” And that’s true. And the truth is, Rhadi definitely knows how to pull the winner out and he knows some things that others just don’t know.

If I were you I would definitely take this opportunity to get a hold of his Coaching Success Secrets, you’ll be glad that you did.

Is your judo going backwards?

Auto Date Friday, July 18th, 2008

Its no secret that time is not standing still.

Progress is necessary. It is a must.

If you are not moving forward, then you are inevitably moving backwards.

And if you don’t take action now over your judo career and make some drastic moves towards improvement, then you find yourself, months from now, with the same problems and frustrations that you have today.

It does not have to be so.

You can fix many of your judo problems by fixing how you think about them.

I know that people are jaded and skeptical. Hell, so am I.

But I also know that THERE ARE VERY FEW judo players who are out there trying to provide the WORLDWIDE judo community with the “best in class” in terms of information and knowledge about the sport.

I’m not here to make fancy videos, sell gis and fancy key chains. I AM HERE TO TEACH.

And hopefully you are in the frame of mind that you still believe that you can learn something.

If that’s the case, then we have a marriage made in heaven.

If that’s not the case, well, I’m sorry about that. I hope you change your mind soon.

For those that want to learn.
