How To Create The Expectation Of Winning
Have you ever been to a judo tournament and sat in the stands and just picked out the winner before the matches have even begun?
Of course you have and the funny part is that you’ve done so with such assuredness that your “pick” is definitely gonna win.
Have you ever been a competitor and looked at the brackets (draws) the night before the tournament and got upset because you didn’t have a “good” draw?
Or worse, have you ever just resolved to get second or third because you kew you couldn’t beat”the other” guy?
Many of you have.
The question that I have for you.. Well, I really have two questions for you. My questions are:
1. How did that person *create* in your mind that they were the obvious choice as the winner and….
2. Why do you believe it to be true?
Now I’m not talking about obvious situations like a child playing Michael Jordan in a one-on-one basketball game. I’m talking about situations like the Super Bowl where the Indianapolis Colts are playing the Chicago Bears. How can you say that one team will be the other with such conviction? How?
I’ll tell you how.You BLINDLY believe that one is going to win and the other is going to lose. So my question is – WHY CAN’T YOU DO THAT WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR OWN JUDO MATCHES?!?!? WHY?!?!?
I’ve personally seen people beat themselves at the weigh-ins. As a matter of fact, before I could learn how to fly, I did this too. I can remember, when I was a mere mortal, being in line in Budapest, Hungary preparing to weigh-in and saying, “Wow, these are the same people that I watch on the video tape.” I was amazed. I was so amazed that I was a FRC.
For those that don’t know what a FRC is, its a FIRST ROUND CLOWN! That means that I paid a couple thousand buck to participate in a tournament and get pummeled at a camp.
When I started to look at the winners, I found out something. Most of the losers had AGREED to lose before starting and most of the winners had set their minds on winning. And you could tell when people were absolutely SHOCKED when they lost and those who just expected to lose. The reaction is so different.
After winning the 1999 World Championships in Judo – my friend Jimmy Pedro was on top of the world. He went into the 2000 Olympics with the expectation to win. He had a phenomenal tournament but he ended up 5th. Now 5th in the world is not bad, but Jimmy really expected to win. The problem and the good thing about the Olympics is that it only comes around every 4 years and so – most of the people there are able to conjure up the belief or expectation to win because they’ve been injected with the Olympic Spirit, which has been shown to take a mere underdog and boost him to the status of CHAMPION overnight.
Well, the Judo Crusader has found out one of the ingredients in that spirit which creates such an expectation. And he has pinpointed it’s location. And if you want this thing and if you want to put it in your arsenal so that you, your kids, your team or your friend NEVER have to agree to lose again, well…. you can have it. A great philosopher by the name of Sophocles wrote, “Wisdom outweighs any wealth.” The Judo Crusader says, “Wisdom outweighs technique. Its not the techniques you know, its what YOU can do with the techniques you know.”
Stop believing in the power of others, and start ACCURATELY believing in yourself!!
